Self-esteem and Confidence
What is self-esteem?
The term self-esteem is used to describe a person’s overall sense of self-worth or personal value; in other words, how much you appreciate and like yourself. It can involve a variety of beliefs about yourself, such as the appraisal of your own appearance, beliefs, emotions and behaviours.
What is confidence?
While self-confidence and self-esteem are usually linked, they are not the same thing. When we talk about self-confidence, we are referring to the way we feel about our ability to carry out tasks and roles. To be self-confident is to be secure and to trust your own abilities, qualities and judgement.
Why are healthy self-esteem and confidence important?
Solid confidence and self-esteem are the foundations of a healthy, happy life. Healthy self-esteem means you rate yourself well in most areas of your life, and confidence is the ability to act based on the fact that you trust yourself to do your best. It is important to realise that being confident doesn’t mean you expect to be perfect or succeed all the time. In fact, having healthy self-esteem and confidence means whether you make it or not, you don’t take it as a reflection of your personal worth. You still value and respect yourself, while you learn from your experience.
Symptoms of low self-esteem and confidence:
If you have low self-esteem and a lack of confidence, you may experience some or all of the following:
- ongoing anxiety and worry
- comparing yourself negatively with others
- being extremely self-critical
- always needing to feel or be in control
- negative self-thoughts
- being afraid of change
- frustration
- procrastination
- being a perfectionist
- low energy, disturbed sleep and digestion
- negative effects of using harmful coping mechanisms, for example, comfort eating / drinking, smoking, working too much
How we can help you:
Both hypnotherapy and NLP are uniquely suited to working with the content of the subconscious, so are very effective for helping you improve your confidence and self-esteem. During the deep relaxation of hypnosis, the subconscious mind is more receptive to updating your views of yourself using words, images and emotions. We can correct any past distortions and negative beliefs or messages that you are holding about yourself.
As a result, you become more able to challenge old, negative views, and start to perceive yourself accurately and positively, in more areas of your life. You begin to find from experience that you are not as bad as you thought you were, giving yourself credit where it’s due. And that setbacks are most often temporary, and not a reflection on you personally, unless you allow them to be. You start to give yourself the benefit of the doubt, while encouraging and supporting your efforts to live the life you want and be the best that you can be.
