Be it a job interview, an audition or a stage performance – presenting in front of an audience can be daunting.

Our nerves can be based on a fear about not being good enough, not being liked, or not achieving what we want to achieve. Similarly, with any kind of exam, be that a school exam, work exam or a driving test, we know that we are likely to feel nervous to some degree because we are being tested on our knowledge.

We may fear that our memory will let us down. A certain amount of nerves can be positive before any performance or exam – we can use them as a motivator to drive us to perform to our full potential.

What happens when our nerves become overwhelming?

When these nerves become overwhelming, which may happen at any age, they can create a high degree of anxiety, which will impact on us both physically and mentally, as panic sets in. We may experience a racing heart, sweaty palms, butterflies and a dry mouth. We can forget the knowledge that we have and our ability to perform decreases. As our nerves and panic increase we feel more out of control and this can lead to panic attacks and a longer-term negative impact on us being able to perform to the best of our ability in pressurised situations. Once these patterns of behaviour are established they need to be changed on a subconscious level.
