Fears and phobias
What is a fear?
A fear is defined as, “An unpleasant emotion caused by the threat of danger, pain, or harm.” Although unpleasant, fear is important to us because it kicks into gear our survival mechanism, otherwise known as our fight or flight response; this means that our bodies are prepared to either fight a perceived threat or to run away from it.
What is a phobia?
A phobia is defined as, “An extreme or irrational fear of or aversion to something.” A phobia is therefore a fear in its extreme form and involves an individual changing their behaviour to keep themselves ‘safe’ from a perceived threat.
Types of fears and phobias
There are many things / situations that people can have fears and phobias about. More common ones include: spiders, snakes, closed spaces, open spaces, crowds, flying, heights, public speaking and performances. There are also less common but equally unpleasant fears of things such as tomato ketchup and baked beans.
How do people ‘do’ fears and phobias?
Whatever the fear or phobia individuals will use different strategies to try and manage it. This can include not doing certain things that they want to do, for example, not travelling abroad for fear of flying; not seeing people whom they want to see, for example, not leaving the house due to fear of open spaces; ultimately not being who they want to be and not living the life they want to. Fears and phobias can leave individuals feeling completely out of control of themselves and their life.
The good news!
If you are currently experiencing a fear or phobia and can relate to the above, the good news is that you can be helped to overcome it – permanently. We are not born with fears and phobias; we learn them, probably through an unpleasant experience or trauma and from this we create certain patterns of behaviour to try to cope with and manage it. Any learned behaviour can be unlearned, and new ways of behaving can be taken on board and adopted.
We offer a rapid breakthrough session during which we use a range of techniques, both hypnotherapy and NLP, to permanently free you from your fear or phobia and help put you back into control of you and your life. You will then be able to live your life and enter into your future, free of the fear or phobia, being the person you want to be and living the life that you want live.
