What is insomnia?

Insomnia is a common sleep disorder that can make it hard to fall asleep or stay asleep. It also can cause you to wake up too early and not be able to get back to sleep. You may still feel tired when you wake up. Insomnia can drain your energy level and affect your mood. It also can affect your health, work performance and quality of life.

How many people suffer with Insomnia?

It is estimated that roughly:

  • One in 3 adults has experienced brief insomnia symptoms, which resolve after a short period.
  • One in 5 adults has a short-term insomnia disorder, which lasts three months or less.
  • One in 10 adults has a chronic insomnia disorder, which happens at least three times per week for three months or more.

The importance of sleep

Sleep is hugely important for our overall functioning, as it allows our body and mind to recharge, leaving us feeling refreshed and ready for a new day when we awake.  A sufficient amount of sleep also helps the body remain healthy and supports us in staving off diseases. How much sleep we need will vary from person to person but guidelines suggest that for most healthy adults, we need 7 hours of sleep per night.

When we do not get enough sleep, the brain is not able to function properly and therefore our ability to concentrate, think clearly and process information is impaired.  We become stressed and irritable, and people who suffer from prolonged insomnia can experience physical health conditions such as obesity, high blood pressure, strokes, and heart disease.

How we can help

The good news is that we can help you with the factors that are underpinning and contributing towards your insomnia.  Whether you prefer to opt for a talking therapy such as counselling, a subconscious modality like hypnotherapy, or a combination, we will work with you to help you identify the thoughts, feelings, and behaviours that are contributing to your symptoms of insomnia.  Our cognitive-behavioural solution focused approaches are proven to be extremely effective and many of our clients benefit from an improved night’s sleep in as little as one session.
